VIRTUAL: Shake Rattle and Read

Friday, January 2810:30—11:15 AMVirtualWinchester Public Library80 Washington St, Winchester, MA, 01890

Kids ages 2 and 3 join us virtually for a musical storytime! We'll make music with what we have at home and read some rockin' good books too! No registration required!

Here are 6 ways you can create instruments to use during Shake Rattle and Read with items you have at home:

Kazoos: Put wax paper at the end of a cardboard tube, and attach it with rubber bands. Poke a few holes in the side of the tube with a pencil. Hum or speak into the open end of the tube. If you only have a cardboard tube, you can use it as a voice amplifier.

Guitars: Use an empty tissue box with rubber bands stretched over the opening (be sure to remove the plastic flaps from the opening for easier strumming). You can even take it up a notch, and cut a hole in one end of the box and insert a paper towel tube for the guitar’s neck. Then tape the tube down so it doesn’t slip out.

Drums: Use empty oatmeal or coffee containers! You can use the original lids, stretch a balloon over the open end and tape it down, or use duct tape across the open end.

Drums: Food storage containers, toy pots and pans, and spoons can make great drums.

Shakers: Fill an empty cardboard salt shaker part-way with dried beans, popcorn kernels, or rice. Be sure to tape the spout shut!

Shakers: Use a sealed box of pasta.
