Invading Men's Sphere: How the New Woman Transformed Gender

Monday, March 47:00—8:00 PMLarge Meeting RoomWinchester Public Library80 Washington St, Winchester, MA, 01890

Laura R. Prieto,  Ph.D. will discuss the New Woman era (1890s - 1920s) in the United States.

At the turn of the 20th century, American women increasingly demanded an independent, active life for themselves. They gradually succeeded in gaining access to what was once reserved only for men: education, wage work, athletics, public entertainment, and even politics. This program explores how a generation of "New Women" transformed their society's gender ideals, redefining everything from appropriate behavior to beauty standards.

Laura R. Prieto, Ph.D. is a Scholar-in-Residence at Suffolk University in Boston. She has a Ph.D. in History from Brown University. She writes about many things, but especially about women, gender, and race in American culture.
